Eclipse Golden Seed Packet by Ellie Lee
Eclipse is my reflection on death, grief, and the way life continues after loss. I created this piece for the Memento Mori exhibition, using the form of my Golden Seed Packet as the starting point. The packet usually holds ideas of growth, memory, and what we carry with us, so it felt meaningful to use that same form to think about death and loss.
Death is something I have always found difficult to understand. We know it is inevitable, but I don’t think we are ever really prepared for it. When loss comes unexpectedly, it can feel like something familiar has suddenly disappeared. I chose an eclipse because it felt close to that feeling. During an eclipse, the sun seems to disappear into darkness, but it is still there. Its light is only hidden for a moment.
The piece shows a mother-of-pearl sun partially covered by a black diamond moon, with three small stars around it. For me, the eclipse became a way of thinking about death not only as an ending, but as something that changes how we see life, memory, and what remains. Memento mori is a reminder that life is finite. To me, Eclipse Golden Seed Packet is also a reminder that even when something is gone from view, its presence can still stay with us.
