My mother who passed away was a potter, we had a graveyard of broken pottery in our backyard she called the archeological site. Broken vessels are a constant in the life of a potter. Some were repaired, some were reused, and some returned to the earth. The cracks in the vessel I crafted are filled with gold. The technique is inspired by kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. Gold pours out of the vessel. As the liquid filters out, the remaining precious gems are revealed. The skeletal hands symbolize one that has passed on, the cracks are the grief of losing a loved one, the pouring of the vessel is loss, the gold and gems are the healing.
The outpouring of an urn crafted from charred wood cracking to reveal its embers and precious fluids.
